UNDP Administrator thanks Maria Sharapova

                                                                                                                                                                         11 August 2010

Dear Ms. Sharapova,

It is my great pleasure to write you following your recent visit as UNDP Goodwill Ambassador to the Chernobyl–affected regions of Belarus. We have been following your field trip with keen interest, and are very pleased with the impact it has generated.

UNDP highly values the importance of initiatives which help the Chernobyl–affected communities regain a sense of self–reliance and which foster social and economic development in the region. In this regard, please accept our gratitude for your announcement of a new contribution of $250,000 toward a UNDP youth–oriented programme in Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. The community–driven development efforts supported by this programme are important to help the youth in a region rich in talent and potential to take greater control of their lives and build a better and more productive future.

UNDP is starting to plan for special commemorative events in April 2011 to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of Chernobyl nuclear accident. We hope that you will be able to join us for these events and help ensure a high level of visibility for our joint efforts in Chernobyl.

I wish you every success in all your undertakings, and look forward to our continued co–operation.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Clark
