Information about Peatlands Gets Easier to Access
A new information source on Belarusian peatlands has been launched online. The website www.peatlands.by has been created under the project on renaturalization and sustainable management of peatlands which is implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) in partnership with the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Belarus.
The new site was developed to ensure access to complete information on the project implementation. The website provides general information about Belarusian peatlands, detailed data about restoration of 17 project sites, documents compiled under the project, and photos of the peatlands prior to restoration and thereafter.
“The site gives everybody a possibility to have a fresh look at what has been created by nature for millions of years, understand and see the real peatlands before and after restoration,” project scientific coordinator, Doctor of Biology Alexander Kozulin believes. “People should realize that peatlands need to be restored, and we have such an opportunity.”
Apart from other things, the website presents news about restoration of peatlands in the world, and provides links to Internet sources related to UNDP/GEF project theme.
The site information will be interesting to people dealing with environmental protection issues, international environmental organizations, projects and experts, mass media, and ordinary nature indifferent citizens.
The website is available in Russian and English.
For additional information please contact Information Officer of the project, Elena Goloubovskaya, at 294-90-69, or UNDP Communications Associate, Vladislav Khilkevich, at 227-38-17, e-mail: vladislav.khilkevich@undp.org.
