Nature Conservation Action Held on the Eve of the International Day for Biodiversity

A nature conservation action was held on 19 May in the Valožin district within the framework of UNDP/GEF project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Territorial Planning Policies and Practices”. The action was dedicated to the International Day for Biological Diversity which is observed every year on 22 May.

The key event was mounting of four information stands in the distribution areas of groundsel and berry-bearing campion as well as in the habitats of European curlew, trout and grayling. The stands contain brief information about these species, their photos and contact phone numbers of environmental protection authorities. After the stands were mounted, passports and protection certificates were handed over to the Head of the District Inspectorate of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

“40 percent of the territory of the Valožin district are covered by forests; forested area is over 77 thousand hectares, – said Natalia Minchenko, Head of Department of Biological and Landscape Diversity of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection. – We do hope that the outcomes of UNDP/GEF pilot project which is now implemented in the district will be successfully replicated all over Belarus and will allow to create sound conditions for sustainable interrelationship of humans and nature for the benefit of current and future generations”.

A tour around the Valožin forestry enterprise was followed by a roundtable held in the Siabryn recreation center. Experts and organizers of the event discussed key issues and concerns related to protection of rare and endangered wildlife and vegetation species and emphasized the need for public participation in conservation of biological diversity in Belarus. Igar Tchoulba, UNDP Programme Analyst, noted that “we should rely entirely on ourselves in addressing the problem of sustaining our natural resources”.

The event was held jointly with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus and the Research and Practical Center for Biological Resources of Belarus’ National Academy of Sciences. It was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Forestry and of Agriculture and Food, the State Property Management Committee of the Republic of Belarus, the Unitary Enterprise “Belgosles”, the Republican Unitary Enterprise “Belgosokhota”, the Valožin District Executive Committee, environmental non-governmental associations and the media.
