Creativity Changes the Approach to Drug Prevention Activities

50 experts representing educational institutions of the Mogilev region learned advanced methods of prevention of drug abuse among young people during a workshop, which was arranged from 14 to 16 May in Mogilev.

The workshop “Interactive Methods and Drama Art in the System of Drug Prevention” was conducted under one of the components of the “Programme for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and the Fight against Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova” (BUMAD-3) funded by the European Commission and Implemented by UNDP. Similar workshops will be arranged in all regional centers of Belarus within the year.

“Regular perfecting the forms and methods of work with young people is needed to increase the efficiency of drug addiction prevention activities”, supposes Anna Chernyshova, UNDP Programme Analyst. “Our experience shows that social instructors responsible for prevention activities in their educational institutions engage with enthusiasm in the training process based on interactive teaching methods. Hence, we should continue working with this target group, the more so because of the success of the previous trainings, which were arranged under the BUMAD Programme”.

The last seminar was a special one, for it enabled the participants not only to learn about the system of drug abuse prevention among teenagers and youths, practice interactive methods and share their experience of arranging drug abuse prevention activities, but also to use their creativity by developing thematic scripts for a “Forum-theatre” practice training game based on the drama stage act method and feedback with the audience. The “Forum-theatre” staging is a theatre art training aimed at developing prevention skills and abilities to improvise, think and evaluate people’s psychological state by inventing different models of behavior.

Having mastered the “Forum-theatre” technology, the workshop participants learned the basics of actor’s mastership, simulated problem situations based on their personal experience, and staged a mini-performance on the prevention topic. Afterwards the trainers analyzed the acts and state of the performance characters, found the optimal and constructive ways out and solutions of a concrete problem and possible options of conflict prevention.

The workshop participants admit that now when filled with creative energy, they can change their approaches to prevention activity among teenagers. This is exactly the purpose of the trainers who have arranged this unusual workshop: representatives of the Youth Educational Center “Fialta”, Belarusian Association of UNESCO Clubs, and Christian Children’s Fund.
