35 project ideas will be implemented by the end of the year 2010

On 9 June 2010 the Project Ideas’ Contest organized under the joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” is declared closed and the final results are summed up. Thirty five project initiatives are recognized as winners of the contest and will be implemented in 4 target districts of Gomel Oblast, namely, Vetka, Zhitkovichy, Khoiniki and Buda-Koshelevo. The total funding will exceed 0.5 million USD.

These 35 project initiatives selected by the Steering Committee members – representatives from EU, UNDP, the Ministry of Emergencies, and regional and district authorities – are the most economically viable and important out of the 80 ideas generated by the local communities.

The approved project initiatives will focus on improving socio-economic environment in the target area developing skills and capacities among the kids, healthy lifestyles of the local communities.

– We are pleased to mention that the number of project proposals exceeded our expectations – shared his impression Andrei Pinihin, Project Manager – This shows that the local population is not indifferent to their problems and they are ready to take the lead and solve the problems of their region.

The first training for the winners was conducted in early June 2010. Many of the organizations are “newcomers” in this sphere and project implementation will be their first experience which is another proof that such initiatives are necessary. The project team is planning to organize a range of seminars on SME development and fundraising in the nearest future.

Additional Information: The joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” was launched in July 2009.
