The First Regional Aarhus Center Opened in Hrodna

The First Regional Aarhus Center Opened in HrodnaThe Regional Aarhus Center established in the Hrodna Regional Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection within the framework of EU/UNDP Project “Support to the development of a comprehensive framework for international environmental cooperation in the Republic of Belarus” was opened on 16 November.

The Aarhus Center will facilitate the implementation of the main provisions of the Aarhus Convention: ensuring access to information, participation of the residents of Hrodna and the Hrodna Region in decision-making on environmental matters and access to justice.

In the Aarhus Center visitors can get consultations of environmental law specialists, participate in free trainings and workshops and get assistance in organization of educational events and publication of information materials on condition of the environment and environmental protection.

– The fact that the event awaked interest and brought together representatives of the government authorities and environmental non-governmental organizations, education establishments and mass media is the evidence of their willingness to coordinate efforts and to work together toward the implementation of the main provisions of the Aarhus Convention, – stressed Farid Garakhanov, UNDP Resident Representative a.i. in Belarus, at the opening ceremony.

The official opening of the Aarhus Center has been preceded by the educational seminar for the interested public in Hrodna.
