Contest of Tourist Territories: From Application to Strategy

Contest of Tourist Territories: From Application to StrategyThe contest for selection of the pilot tourist territories in Hrodna and Brest Regions for participation in the Project “Local Entrepreneurship and Economic Development” supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the UN Development Programme is under way in Belarus. On December 4-13 the project staff organized a series of workshops to inform potential applicants about the project and formulation of applications. The project has thus provided advisory support to stakeholders and drawn attention of potential applicants from all districts of the Hrodna and the Brest Regions.

Three workshops have been held in each region to inform representatives of small tourist businesses, local authorities, non-governmental associations and their counterparts about the eligibility requirements and criteria for evaluation of the applications. The participants of the workshops worked in groups and went through all stages of the formulation of an application in a training mode. Many of them used their own creative ideas on development of the tourist territories which they are going to present at the contest.

– Judging by the number of participants, the workshops have drawn considerable public attention in the regions and have reaffirmed the interest of businesses, local authorities and non-governmental associations in joint implementation of the project activities. The interest to the contest of tourist destinations is constantly increasing from the date of its official announcement. The project team will continue to provide advisory support to potential applicants in preparation of applications on an individual basis, – said Maryna Barouka, Project Manager.

Private businesses, non-governmental organizations and local authorities and self-governance bodies of the Hrodna and the Brest Regions are invited to submit applications from November 26 to January 10.

The winners of the contest will get professional assistance in development of the strategies of environmentally sustainable tourism in the selected territories, their marketing and promoting tourist services at the national and international markets. The representatives of small and medium tourist companies, organizations supporting tourism and local authorities will be provided an opportunity to improve their qualification in tourist business management in Belarus and in foreign countries.

At a later stage the Project will announce a contest among private business and NGOs for financing local initiatives. Provision of financial support will launch practical implementation of the development strategies for the tourist territories which are now being selected.
