"Ensure Universal Access of the Key Affected Populations in Belarus to HIV Prevention, Treatment, and Care" 00073353 Project results achieved in 2010
Antiretroviral therapy was provided to 2,614 patients in 2010 in the framework of the project. About 190 pregnant women took a full course forthe prevention of vertical transmission. Prevention–related activities are ongoing among populations vulnerable to HIV. Thirty–three anonymous counselling points forinjecting drug users are operational in Belarus. As many as 4,500 clients used the services of these establishments in 2010 forthe first time. The total number of clients who approached the counsellors amounts to 31,132.
Activities to introduce replacement therapy fordrug users are being implemented: special rooms based in clinics fordrug users are already operational in seven towns. As of today, more than 450 patients participate in the respective programme. The advantage of this therapy is that it enhances the quality of patients' lives, brings them back to society, improves their relations with the family and disengages them from the criminal world. About 90 participants of the programme have been successful in finding a new job.
Eight case management centers forinjecting drug users operate in Minsk, Homiel, Svietlahorsk, Pinsk, Lida, Mahiliou and Hrodna. The case management programme covers 753 drug users and resulted in more than 2,500 referrals to experts providing medical, psychological, social and legal assistance. About 80 organizations, including non–governmental charity organizations, territorial social support centers, police departments, central district hospital and government's departments forlabor, employment and social protection, have joined the partnership network providing support to the case management centers.
Prevention activities have been conducted and targeted as many as 2,899 men having sex with men and 6,098 women in sex business.
