Results of project 00062457 Area Based Development of the Chernobyl-Affected Areas of Belarus

Fully renovated children's playground near a 60-apartment house located in the center of the town of Vetka (Gomel Region) was the first result achieved under the project. The opening ceremony was held in October 2009 and turned to be excellent gift for local children. This is now the only functioning playground in the town of Vetka which counts about 8,000 inhabitants.

In the end of 2009, the Gomel hosted the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between UNDP and representatives of local authorities of the four districts of the Gomel region (the Buda-Koshelevo, Vetka, Zhitkovichi and Khoiniki districts). Signing of the Memorandum shows the mutual willingness to cooperate in the project and create conditions for active communities’ participation.

Under the project the Round table on the most problematic issues as employment was held in Khoiniki town. It gathered representatives of Ministry of Emergencies of the Republic of Belarus, district and regional authorities, public and farmers' organizations, the Employment Fund, as well as representatives of local small and medium businesses.
