Project Objective & Brief Description:

The objective of the project is to improve health of population leaving in the Chernobyl-affected communities of the Stolin District by establishing a sustainable framework and mechanisms for education of target groups (healthcare professionals, pregnant women and nursing mothers, ‘reproductive reserve group’ women, future fathers, secondary school teachers and schoolchildren) on the issues of healthy parenthood, upbringing and developing healthy children as well as safe living in the Chernobyl-affected regions of Belarus. The project has the following main tasks:

1. Establishing a sustainable framework and mechanisms of education of medical and pedagogical professionals on healthy maternity, paternity and childhood, radiation safe living and practicing healthy lifestyles in Chernobyl-affected areas.

2. Improving the level of radioecological knowledge of the target population living in the radiation contaminated areas.

3. Developing information materials and recommendations on healthy living under the conditions of radiation exposure risk, and on teaching secondary school children, who live in the Chernobyl-affected communities, healthy lifestyles and radiation safety skills.

Achievements/Results:

Educational seminars were organized for medical workers and secondary school teachers on reproductive health and teaching children and young people healthy lifestyles and responsible attitude towards their health. 20 medical workers have been trained the skills of organising peer-to-peer education to pass the knowledge and skills gained within the project to those not involved in the project activities.

Women of 9 communities of the Stolin District attended in the thematic classes in the prevention of pregnancy and delivery complications and the rules of feeding babies, including breast feeding, also safe living practices in a radiation contaminated territories.

Consultative-information center “Dialogue” was opened on the premises of the Stolin central district hospital with the support of the project. The centre is aimed to provide advisory assistance to new mothers and their families on healthy maternity, parenting and developing a healthy child.
