Project Objective & Brief Description: |
The main goal of the project was provision of socio-psychological rehabilitation for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA), assistance in adaptation to a new lifestyle and motivation of PLHA to participate actively in HIV prevention and in fruition of their rights and interests.
The strategic goal of the project was to mitigate the negative results of epidemic for the population in general.
Within the framework of the project an access to social and psychological support for PLHA was provided through three main directions:
During the self-help group meetings organized weekly. People share their experience of overcoming crisis situations, sometimes not directly touching upon the HIV/AIDS issue.
In the process of in-group and individual psychotherapeutic work with professional psychologists.
With the help of hotline on HIV/AIDS issues which is operated by the trained consultants including HIV- positive people themselves.
At the beginning of the project the scope of activities was mainly aimed at people’s adaptation and their psychological rehabilitation, this year the emphasis is focused on the HIV-positive people’s personal active involvement in public activities. The 2002-2003 World AIDS Campaign is focused on prevention of stigma and discrimination of people touched by the epidemic and its slogan was “Live and let live”. The activity of the project in the year of 2003 was based on changing of the public opinion related to the attitude to people living with HIV/AIDS.
Within the framework of the project a national sociological poll was conducted. The poll covered the issues of population’s attitudes towards HIV-positive people, and the legislative base was analyzed concerning the respect of human rights in the context of HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is noteworthy to mention that there was a wide public information and advocacy campaign, the core issue of which was the photo exhibition – installation “The Door?!” telling people about the way HIV/AIDS comes into people’s lives and how it changes them. There was a special “HIV-related” CD of the group “Drum Ecstasy” produced within the project, CD with materials about photo-exhibition, informational booklet; and special thematic video clips were prepared.
