Project Number:

BYE/00/001

Project Title:

BYE/00/001 Environmental Management and Monitoring System in Belarus (The Rehabilitation of Dniepr River Basin)

Status:

Completed projects

Project Objective & Brief Description:

The goal of the project was to prepare the Republic of Belarus to participate fully and effectively in the regional GEF project "Dnieper Basin Environment Programme" through national capacity building.

The Dnieper flows across heavily industrialised and urbanised territories and areas characterised by overuse of fertilisers and pesticides in all three countries. Due to high pollution levels, 40% of the drinking water taken from the Dnieper in Belarus and Russia does not meet water quality requirements. As a result of unsustainable patters of water and use, many plant and animal species are becoming extinct.
