Achievements/Results:

In 2005, within the framework of BOMBEL, 190 units of radiation control equipment were purchased and transferred to the national Border Guards. The equipment is intended to help in counteracting more efficiently illegal transfers of radioactive and nuclear substances. Training workshops on utilizing the new equipment were held with participation of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expert on the premises of the Border Guards in the cities of Lida and Smorgon. In addition, a three-week seminar on developing the skills for detecting forged documents was conducted for the Belarusian border guards in Vienna.

Puppies, veterinary equipment, outfit for dogs and instructors were purchased for the Border Guards dogs training center in the city of Smorgon (its development is envisaged by BOMBEL). The dogs housing walking and training facilities were renovated. Three dogs-transporting minivans were purchased (photos). The EU/UNDP project also funded the purchase of several digital automatic telephone stations, eight fixed, twelve car and over 100 portable radio-stations for the Border Guards.

In October 2005 a digital communication channel between the State Border Guard Committee of Belarus and the Sosny settlement-based Border Guard Communication Center was put into operation. The new channel will make it possible to utilize all modern telecommunication services for minimum 10-15 years and speed up the data transmitting for the sake of the border security not only of Belarus, but also of the European Union member-states.
