Future of AIDS response focus of UN General Assembly High Level Meeting

More than 3000 people will come together at the United Nations in New York tomorrow for the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on AIDS. The meeting, which runs from 8–10 June, will provide an opportunity to take stock of the progress and challenges of the last 30 years and shape the future AIDS response.

The top level support is coming at a decisive moment in the AIDS response as more people than ever before are living with HIV but international funding for AIDS is seen to be declining.

NAIROBI, 31 March 2011—Thirty years into the AIDS epidemic, investments in the AIDS response are yielding results, according to a new report released today by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Titled Uniting for universal access: towards zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths, the report highlights that the global rate of new HIV infections is declining, treatment access is expanding and the world has made significant strides in reducing HIV transmission from mother to child.

HIV/AIDS consulting room opens in Mogilev

Today the Mogilev center for hygiene, epidemiology and public health hosted a ceremony of opening a youth informational and educational room on HIV/AIDS. From now on anyone can receive here professional consultation and get access to a set of educational services. The room was set up under the “Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus” project implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Ministry of Health of Belarus.

"Belarus is one of the few countries in Eastern and Central Europe where one can say that the situation is under control or stabilized. <...> Belarus with its 0.3% prevalence rate looks in a better shape. This shows that, in Belarus, thanks to the Government’s public health policy and efforts of the national AIDS Centre and other governmental structures, as well as many non-governmental organizations working in this field, it has been possible to rein in the fast spread of the epidemic."

From 2 to 4 October 2006 UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Eastern Europe Professor Lars O. Kallings (Sweden) paid a high level advocacy visit to Belarus. Professor Kallings expressed his satisfaction with the progress achieved by Belarus in the area of HIV and AIDS prevention. The Special Envoy underlined that Belarus can serve as an example of a comprehensive and sustainable response to the epidemic-related challenges in the region.

UNDP launches training seminars on HIV treatment for youth and teachers

A series of training seminars for youth and teachers on treating HIV was launched in Grodno, Belarus, on 15 and 16 September as part of the UNDP project “HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment in the Republic of Belarus”. Twenty-five youth activists of the Grodno region are attending one of the workshops, “Peculiarities of HIV/AIDS Prevention and the Promotion of a Healthy Lifestyle among Youths,” including representatives of youth NGOs, school leaders and students’ self-government bodies.
UNDP launches systematic work to teach doctors all aspects of HIV treatment

UNDP trains managers of consulting units on HIV/AIDS prevention among drug users

Twenty three managers of Anonymous Consulting Units (ACU) from the Minsk, Vitebsk and Gomel regions of Belarus, learned skills on the prevention of HIV/AIDS among injecting drug users during a three-day workshop on the "Efficient Management of an ACU" ending today near Minsk. The workshop is the first in a long-term training course for managers and coordinators of Anonymous Consulting Units organized under a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s project on HIV/AIDS prevention.

A two-day national workshop on the "Organization and Dissemination of Information and Educational Work on HIV/AIDS" prepared education professionals to train young students on methods of HIV/AIDS prevention. The workshop, which ended in Minsk today, was held in the framework of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s project “Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus”. The country's Ministry of Education was a co-organizer of the workshop.

A two-day seminar, ending in Minsk today, trained medical workers of Belarus’ correctional institutions to work with volunteer inmates and prison personnel in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The seminar was part of a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project on prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS and was co-organized by the Penal Department of the Belarusian Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Six journalists were awarded diplomas and valuable prizes at a ceremony held last week after winning a national contest for the best newspaper stories on issues related to HIV/AIDS and drug addiction. The contest, which was organized by the UN Office in Belarus, the Belarusian Ministries of Health and Information and the Belarusian National Youth Union, was aimed at drawing public attention to problems related to the spread of HIV, drug addiction and venereal diseases, as well as at pointing out measures to prevent these diseases.
Soligorsk opens service centre for injecting drug users

A medical centre providing services to injecting drug users while preserving their anonymity was opened in February inside the premises of the Soligorsk City Centre for Hygiene and Epidemiology. The Centre, which was named "Your Choice", has been established under a EU/UNDP: “Programme of Assistance for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova”.

The United Nations Development Programme jointly with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus started the implementation of international technical assistance project «Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus”. The Project was approved by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of Belarus and is funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which represents partnership between governments, civil society and the private sector with the Secretariat in Geneva (Switzerland).

The project was implemented from June 2002 to March 2004 by the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus; technical and financial support was provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
Church and Community Council on HIV/AIDS may be established in Belarus

A working meeting for discussing the idea of establishing the Church and Community Council on HIV/AIDS was held on 20 January in the conference hall of the UN Office in Belarus.
