EU/UNDP/UNICEF Project Enhanced National Capacities in Combating Trafficking in Human Beings

The joint EU/UNDP/UNICEF project “Preventing, Fighting and Addressing the Social Consequences of Trafficking in Human Beings in the Republic of Belarus” has been completed. The project has extended knowledge and skills of specialists of educational establishments in prevention of trafficking in human beings, improved effectiveness of the system of social assistance and rehabilitation of victims of trafficking, enhanced capacity of the law-enforcement agencies in prosecution of criminals, improved cooperation of the relevant agencies and organizations, and raised public awareness about the issue of human trafficking.

The overall results of the joint EU/UNDP Action “Combat the Negative Effects of Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” were presented during the final press-conference in Minsk yesterday. This Action has been implemented since July 2009 in 4 target districts in Homiel Region (Choiniki District, Zytkavicy District, Vietka District, Buda-Kasaliova District).
Third Film Festival Human Dignity, Equality and Justice Took Place at Pobeda Cinema

From 1 to 10 December 2010, the third film festival “Human Dignity, Equality and Justice” jointly organized by UN office Minsk, UNDP Office Belarus and the OSCE Office in Minsk took place at Pobeda Cinema in Minsk, Belarus. The festival was organized to honor Human Rights Day. The UN Resident Coordinator Antonius Broek, Head of the OSCE Office Benedict Haller and Chairman of the Belarusian Children’s Fund Alexander Trukhan participated at the opening ceremony and spoke on behalf of their respected organizations.
Over 2,700 Students Received Knowledge about Safety Rules of Travelling Abroad

HIV Epidemic Stabilized, but Too Early to Be Complacent

Issues of tolerance discussed at the round table in Minsk

On 15 November 2010, on the eve of the International Day for Tolerance, a round table dedicated to the topic “Tolerance of the Individual and Society. About Photo Exhibition Dedicated to 65th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization

The Art Gallery“University of Culture” and the Department of Public Information of the UN Office in Belarus have organized an exhibition dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the United Nations Organization. The exhibition presents photos from the collection of the United Nations Dag Hammarskjold Library depicting various episodes of the UN history.
EU Allocates 5 Million Euro to a New Joint Project

Today, a contribution agreement has been solemnly signed between the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union that envisages the allocation of funds – more than 5 million euro – to a new environmental project that will be implemented for 3 years in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.
United Nations Square Improvements Started in Minsk

Minsk, October 22,  2010 — Representatives of UN agencies, diplomatic missions, the Minsk Municipality and "MisnkZelenstroy" started joint work to improve the United Nations Square. The square was given its name in 1995 in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization. A memorable stone plate “The United Nations Square” in Belarusian and in English was laid to mark the 65th anniversary of UN establishment which is celebrated on October 24.
United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Belarus for 2011 2015 Signed

Today, a formal ceremony of signing the United Nations Development Assistance Framework for Belarus for 2011 – 2015 took place at the National Press Centre. The UNDAF is the first joint strategy of the UN agencies active in Belarus that was prepared in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Belarus and national partners.
Minsk will Host International Conference on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings

The International Conference “Combating Trafficking in Human Beings: New Challenges and Threats. Mutual Response of Governmental, International and Public Organizations” will be organized by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Belarus and the International Organization for Migration, Mission in the Republic of Belarus, within the framework of the project ‘Combating Trafficking in Human Beings: Republic of Belarus’ in cooperation and with support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Swedish Institute (SI).
UNDP/GEF Project Returns Sterlet Back to Pripyat

There is a possibility that in the near future sterlet fish will be back in the Pripyat River. Making such a statement became possible due to the action on stocking the river with young fish of this valuable sturgeon specie, which took place today at the territory of the National Landscape Reserve “Middle Pripyat” in the Luninets District, Brest Region.

A seminar for executive authorities andself–governance bodies of the Minskregion was held in Minskon October 8, 2010(venue: conference hall of the Minsk Region Executive Committee, Engels street4, 5th floor). The seminar was jointly organized by UNHCR Representation in the Republicof Belarusand executive authorities of the Minskregion. It was a continuation of a planned set of similar events, which already took place in Brest, Gomel, Grodnoand Minskin 2008–2010.

Yesterday another three renovated educational establishments for the youngest residents of Homiel Region were officially opened. A Rehabilitation, Education and Development Center in Chojniki town, Crèche and Kindergarten No.3 in Vietka town, local Comprehensive Primary School in Pykhan village, Vietka District, have been renovated and newly equipped within a joint EU/UNDP action “Combat the Negative Effects of Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus”.

The 7th of September was an important day for Gomel Oblast marked by a couple of memorable events. Three different but interesting and important for people project sites were officially opened under EU/UNDP action “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus”. The residents of the Vetka city, Gomel Oblast together with the guests celebrated a move to a renovated and newly equipped residential building.
A Present for the New School Year from a Joint EU/UNDP Project

On the eve of September 1, as many as two children’s preschool institutions of the Homieĺ Region overjoyed their kindergarteners by new sports and gaming facilities. On August 27, a welcoming and modern gym/music hall opened after renovation in the Crèche and Kindergarten No. 2 in the town of Chojniki, and a playground was put in operation on the premises of the kindergarten in the village of Sudkava in the Chojniki District. That became possible thanks to the financial assistance of the EU/UNDP project "Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl disaster in Belarus".
International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on 29 August

On 27 August  2010 the National Press Center hosted a press conference devoted to the International Day against Nuclear Tests, which is celebrated all over the world on 29 August 2010. The proposal calling for the establishment of the Day was put forward by the Government of Kazakhstan and co–sponsored by 25 UN Member States, including the Republic of Belarus.
The Largest Belarusian Fair Revived with the Support of an EU/UNDP Project

On August 21, the urban-type settlement of Zeĺva (Hrodna Region) hosted Anna’s Fair – formerly one of the largest trade and entertainment festivals in Europe. The revival of the fair is the result of joint efforts undertaken by the administration of the settlement and the EU/UNDP project “Sustainable Development at Local Level” that aims to revive the traditions of ancestors. The project provided financial and advisory assistance to Zeĺva residents to resume the fair.
A Consultative Centre for Support Related to the Issues of Small and Medium Business Starts to Operate in Homiel

Yesterday, a Centre for Expert and Consultative Support Related to the Issues of Small and Medium Business established within the framework of the joint EU/UNDP “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” opened in Homieĺ. The Centre operates on the premises of the “Business Centre Ltd.” Over the course of the first three months, free consultations on the issues of small and medium business will be provided to local residents here.

In her open letter, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme Helen Clark has thanked the UNDP Goodwill Ambassador Maria Sharapova for contributing 250,000 dollars towards expanding youth–oriented programmes in Belarus, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine, and has invited the tennis–player to participate in the events planned for 2011 and dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

13 journalists representing media from Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania and the UK visited Belarus on July 22–24. One of the main objectives of the visit was to familiarize the citizens of EU Member States with specific projects, which the European Union is implementing in Belarus within the European Neighbourhood Policy.
Maria Sharapova Gives Quarter Million Dollars for UNDP projects

Gomel, Belarus — Maria Sharapova, tennis star and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, today made a personal contribution of US $250,000.00 to expand a UNDP–supported programme that provides sports and physical activities for youth in the area affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. A report from the 2005 Chernobyl Forum, involving eight specialized UN agencies and the governments of Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine, found that although the health–related effects of the disaster have cleared up, poverty and diseases related to alcohol, smoking, stress and poor diets remain serious threats to people living in the region.
Maria Sharapova heads to Belarus to visit youth affected by Chernobyl disaster and support recovery projects

Geneva/New York, 24 June 2010 — United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador Maria Sharapova will head from the 2010 Wimbledon tournament, to Belarus to visit an area affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The tennis star plans to travel to the Gomel region where her charitable foundation has helped fund a number of UNDP youth-focused projects.

Two first Infocentres for sustainable development and ecotourism opened in Belarus

Two information centers for sustainable development and ecotourism, established within EU/UNDP joint project “Sustainable development at local level”, were inaugurated June 11-12 in Navapolack and village Zaborje (Rasony district, Viciebsk region). The activities of both centers include research, information and training seminars and workshops, rendering of library services for sustainable development.
35 project ideas will be implemented by the end of the year 2010

On 9 June 2010 the Project Ideas’ Contest organized under the joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” is declared closed and the final results are summed up. Thirty five project initiatives are recognized as winners of the contest and will be implemented in 4 target districts of Gomel Oblast, namely, Vetka, Zhitkovichy, Khoiniki and Buda-Koshelevo. The total funding will exceed 0.5 million USD.
New opportunities for children from the Chernobyl-affected District

Today, in Veliky Bor kindergarten / secondary school named after B.I. Sachenko (Khoiniki District, Gomel Region) the first ever children handicrafts fair was held under the EU/UNDP project "Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus”. The organization and running of the handicrafts fair was initiated and carried out by the local children themselves.
Two Days in Belarus under the Slogan Quit Smoking Breathe Freely!

The residents of Belarusian cities became witnesses to unusual actions on the last days of spring. On May 30–31, everyone who wished to do so had an opportunity not only to quit smoking, but also to get a reward for doing it – a t–shirt with the picture of a green tree and with the slogan of the action “Breathe Freely!"  The action started on May 30 near the National Library – competitions for professional and amateur bicyclists took place there.
Recommendations for Journalists on Covering the Issue of Human Trafficking Developed in Belarus

For the first time, recommendations for journalists on covering the issue of human trafficking and related crimes have been developed in Belarus. The document was elaborated by the journalists of the national and regional media and students of the Institute of Journalism of the Belarusian State University with participation of international experts from Ukraine during the training “Covering the Issue of Human Trafficking in the Media” organized in the framework of the EU–UNDP–UNICEF project “Preventing, Fighting and Addressing the Social Consequences of Trafficking in Human Beings in the Republic of Belarus”.
Belarus receives more than $24 million to fight HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has awarded two major grants Belarus which will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The grants allocate US $17 million to fight tuberculosis and US $7.5 million to fight HIV/AIDS for the years 2010–2013. Vladimir Potupchik, Vice Premier of Belarus and Chair of the Belarussian Association of anti–HIV/AIDS NGOs, signed the agreements on behalf of Belarus.
Biological Diversity in the Art Project Biosphere 2010

On the eve of the International Day for Biological Diversity — marked every year on May 22 — the opening of the exhibition "Biosphere 2010" took place. It is the third joint art project of the art gallery “The University of Culture” and the UN Country Office in the Republic of Belarus. This topical project is implemented within the framework of the International Year of Biological Diversity proclaimed by the UN General Assembly. Its objective is to shape a new vision of biodiversity.
Head and Employees of the UN Office in Belarus Take HIV Tests

The action “I have taken an HIV test!” with the participation of Mr. Antonius Broek, UN Resident Coordinator / UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus, and employees of UN agencies has taken place today within the framework of the information campaign “The Red Line. Let’s Stop AIDS Together!” The objective of the event timed to International AIDS Memorial Day was to draw public attention to the issues of HIV and AIDS. By participating in the action, UN representatives honored the memory of those who had died from the disease.
New Dam Becomes a Reliable Defender from Annual Floods

May 14, 2010 – an opening of the road dam event took place in the village Zapesochye, Gomel Oblast, an anti–flood construction, unique by its idea and implementation. The ecologically friendly dam was constructed within the joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus”. Zapesochje village is located on the right bank of the picturesque Pripyat River, which is notable forits tricky character and is often called the Belarusian Poseidon.

New Project to Help Conserve Biodiversity Outside the Boundaries of Specially Protected Natural Areas

The new UNDP/GEF project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Territorial Planning Policies and Practices”, an inception seminar of which was held in Minsk yesterday, is designed to ensure environmentally balanced land use at the district level. Land use is environmentally balanced if production activities outside the boundaries of protected natural areas are conducted without distorting the normal operation of ecosystems and their components.
International Mother Earth Day Marked by Environmental Actions with the Participation of the United Nations

From March 29 till April 2 a large–scale medical screening of adults and children was held in Mozyr town (Gomel Region) within the joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus.”
The screening was conducted in the premises of the Mozyr central clinic with the assistance of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education within the project component “Establishment of International Scientific and Practical Centre of Thyroid Disease”.

Candles in memory of Holocaust victims lit in Minsk

Yesterday, the United Nations Office in Belarus together with public association “The National Holocaust Foundation” and the Union of Belarusian Jewish Communities held a commemorative evening event dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day. 65 years ago Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz–Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
