An awards ceremony featuring winners of the students’ essay contest “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in My Life” and an opening ceremony of an exhibition of human rights literature will be arranged on December 10, 2008, on Human Rights Day, at 14:00 pm at the 2nd floor atrium of the National Library of Belarus(116, Prospect Nezavisimosty, Minsk).

A new step in the development of telemedicine has been taken under the UN Global Compact. The Minsk district has become Belarus’ first pilot site, where cellular communications technologies were applied in telemedicine.A partner project of business, the state and UN agencies on the development of telemedicine in Belarusian regions was launched on March 27, 2008 at the meeting of a working group comprised of representatives of the Ministry of Health of Belarus, Belarusian Center for Medical Technology, Scientific and Research Institute of Oncology, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Mobile TeleSystems Ltd. (MTS), World Health Organization, and UNDP.

A charity gala–concert of the international motor race “STOP–AIDS!” took place yesterday in the centre of Minsk, with Belarusian and Russian singers participating. The motor race, which started on 27 August in Moscow, went through the cities of Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus.

Since now on, any citizen of Belarus using the Internet has an opportunity without leaving home to find out where to apply for one or another permit or certificate, which documents to submit, and what expenses to cover. Web presentations of certain administrative procedures, mostly asked for by Belarus’ citizens with state administrative bodies, were made public for the first time on 3 October in Kirovsk (Mogilev region) during a workshop “Positive practice of administrative procedures regulation in Belarus” arranged by the UNDP project.
Maria Sharapova launches programme of scholarships for youth from Chernobyl-affected areas in Belarus 18 September 2008 | UNDP Geneva/ Minsk 18 September 2008— Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced today that she is launching a $210,000 scholarship programme for students from Chernobyl–affected areas of Belarus. The programme is a joint initiative of the Maria Sharapova Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where she serves as Goodwill Ambassador. The scholarships will enable 12 talented young people from Chernobyl–affected regions to follow a full course of studies at two leading universities in Belarus.

Creativity Changes the Approach to Drug Prevention Activities 19 May 2008 | UNDP
50 experts representing educational institutions of the Mogilev region learned advanced methods of prevention of drug abuse among young people during a workshop, which was arranged from 14 to 16 May in Mogilev. The workshop “Interactive Methods and Drama Art in the System of Drug Prevention” was conducted under one of the components of the “Programme for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and the Fight against Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova” (BUMAD-3) funded by the European Commission and Implemented by UNDP. Similar workshops will be arranged in all regional centers of Belarus within the year.
Yesterday the town of Radoshkovichi (Minsk region) hosted the final seminar on the project “Biomass Energy for Heating and Hot Water Supply in Belarus”, which has been implemented by UNDP in partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for almost five years.

Contest for journalists 06 March 2008
The contest is open for teams of newspapers, magazines, radio stations and TV companies, groups of authors and teams, and individual journalists. The contest objective is to attract attention of Belarusian community to the problem of refugees and asylum seekers.
Contest of scholarships for students and postgraduates 05 March 2008
The contest is opened for 1–4 year students of day–time departments of higher educational institutions of the Republicof Belarus, as well as for 1–2 year day–time post–graduate students. The contest objective is to encourage research on topics related to refugee issues.
UNHCR Office in Belarus announces a contest of children’s works of arts devoted to World Refugee Day 04 March 2008
For a number of years, the UNHCR Office in Belarus, Ministry of Education of Belarusand the Centre for Youth and Adolescents “Evrika” of the Frunzensky District of Minsk City have organized a contest of children’s works of arts devoted to World Refugee Day. The contest has become popular in the country, and the organizing committee has received over 1000 works every year. The best among the works have been exhibited in the NationalMuseumon History and Culture.

From 12 to 15 February the WHO mission consisting of Dr G. Perfilieva, Regional Adviser, Health Sector Human Resources, WHO Regional Office for Europe and WHO consultants Dr Z. Padaiga and L. Japan Provides 1.5 million US Dollars to Enhance Human Security in the Chernobyl Affected Area of Belarus 31 January 2008 | UNDP
The Government of Japan has approved the release of US$ 1,506,230.83 from the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, to finance the project entitled “Enhancing Human Security in the Chernobyl Affected Area of Belarus”. The project will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in cooperation with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Belarus.
