A new United Nations initiative – “The Global Compact” – was presented to the Belarusian public and mass media during a conference held yesterday at the Minsk International Educational Center. Representatives of ministries and agencies, the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, international organizations, enterprise associations and businessmen participated in the conference entitled “UN Global Compact Initiative: Opportunities for Building Partnerships of Government, Business Community and Civil Society”.
Youth consulting room on HIV/AIDS opened in Minsk 02 December 2005

The Republic of Belarus joins the International Organization for Migration 30 November 2005
On 29 November
2005 during the 90th Session of the IOM Council in Geneva the Republic of
Belarus became a member of the International Organization for Migration. IOM
Membership gives Belarus the right to vote as well as take part in the
decision-making process of the Council. Besides, Belarus enjoys the right of
being involved in already running programmes or proposing new projects, which
correspond to the government’s interests and needs.
CORE Programme approves 34 new projects 25 November 2005 | UNDP

"Mothers against Drugs" from Belarus became one of the winners of the UN Vienna Civil Society Award 21 November 2005
The winners of the annual United Nations Vienna Civil Society Award
established in 1999, which honours individuals and organizations who have made
outstanding contributions to the fight against drug abuse, crime and terrorism,
will receive their prizes in Vienna, Austria, today, 21 November. The 2005
winners are the Bogota Children's Shelter (Colombia), Mothers against Drugs
(Belarus) and the Rebirth Charity Organization (Iran).
Belarus has become a member of FAO 21 November 2005
On 19 November
2005 at the 33rd Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the
United Nations (FAO) held in Rome, the FAO member states voted for accession of
the Republic of Belarus. In the congratulation speech FAO Director-General
Jacques Diouf noted a considerable contribution of Belarus to agricultural
development, nature management and environmental protection and stressed that
Belarus is striving for full-scale international cooperation in these
areas.
UNDP helps pupils to improve their radio-ecological knowledge 16 November 2005 | UNDP
An educational and counseling center was opened on 15 November in a secondary school of the Vaskovichy village of the Slavgorod district (the Mogilev region). The new center will help children and members of their families to build up practical skills of reducing the risk of radiation exposure, to learn how to assess the radiological situation and to make informed choices needed to develop safe behaviors.

UNDP has welcomes today the decision of Belarus to accede to the Kyoto
Protocol – a key international mechanism to mitigate global climate change. A
decree to this effect was signed by the President of Belarus on Friday 13, 2005.
The protocol will enter into force for Belarus on the ninetieth day following
the date of deposit of its instrument of accession with the UN
Secretary-General.

One of
the possible ways to address rural poverty is to create new jobs in the field of
agro-tourism, said participants of a two-day seminar ending today in the Rossony

UNDP trains managers of consulting units on HIV/AIDS prevention among drug users 29 April 2005
Twenty three managers of Anonymous Consulting Units (ACU) from the
Minsk, Vitebsk and Gomel regions of Belarus, learned skills on the prevention of
HIV/AIDS among injecting drug users during a three-day workshop on the
"Efficient Management of an ACU" ending today near Minsk. The workshop is the
first in a long-term training course for managers and coordinators of Anonymous
Consulting Units organized under a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s
project on HIV/AIDS prevention.

Nineteen Years after Chernobyl, Misconceptions Prevail 26 April 2005
Nearly
two decades after the devastating accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant
on 26 April 1986, residents of areas affected by radioactive contamination in
Belarus, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine still lack the information they
need to lead healthy, productive lives, according to a new report from the
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Instead, misconceptions and myths
about the threat of radiation prevail, promoting a paralyzing fatalism among
residents about their own health.

UNHCR announced a contest of scholarships for students and postgraduates 07 April 2005
The
objective of the contest is to provide financial support for the most talented
Belarusian students and postgraduates, who are involved in studying the issues
of refugees, statelessness, cross-cultural relations and migration. It is
planned that, the winners of the contest will be granted with monthly

A two-day seminar, ending in
Minsk today, trained medical workers of Belarus’ correctional institutions to

UNDP project trains advisers on HIV/AIDS prevention 21 March 2005

HIV/AIDS in the spotlight in Belarusian Media 14 March 2005
Six
journalists were awarded diplomas and valuable prizes at a ceremony held last
week after winning a national contest for the best newspaper stories on issues
related to HIV/AIDS and drug addiction. The contest, which was organized by the
UN Office in Belarus, the Belarusian Ministries of Health and Information and
the Belarusian National Youth Union, was aimed at drawing public attention to
problems related to the spread of HIV, drug addiction and venereal diseases, as

World Bank prepares new lending operation in Belarus 02 March 2005
Mr. Paul
Bermingham, the World Bank Director for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, paid
a two-day-visit to Belarus to exchange views with Belarusian counterparts on the
country socio-economic situation, status of agreed programs and future plans.
Meetings with the Government representatives were focused on preparation of Post

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has funded a sewing mini-shop 01 March 2005
February 27, 2005, the "Eureka" Children and Youth Creativity Centre of the Frunzenskiy District of Minsk held the traditional holiday of children's fashion named "Kaleidoscope of Fantasies-2005."
During the event, a fashion show of a unique collection of clothes took place, which had been designed and tailored by young fashion designers. The "highlight" of the holiday was an opening ceremony of a sewing mini-shop, in which the premises repairs and the purchase of the sewing equipment had been funded by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Belarus.

February
24, 2005, Minsk hosted a roundtable on the problems of state registration of
commercial organizations and individual entrepreneurs. The sitting was organized
by the International Financial Corporation (IFC) and the Ministry of Justice of
the Republic of Belarus under the IFC's Business Enabling Environment Project.
The participants were representatives of the Republic's governmental agencies,
employees of local executive-and-administrative bodies, members of SME
associations and law offices.
Drugs Expert Visits Belarus in EU/UNDP Programme 23 February 2005 | UNDP
A European Union drugs expert Paul Cook is visiting Belarus on 20-24 February as part of a
EU and United Nations Develoment Programme (UNDP) anti-drugs trafficking
programme — the Belarus/Ukraine/Moldova Actions on Drugs (BUMAD). Mr. Cook’s
visit is part of the preparations for a pilot campaign against drug spread to be
conducted under the BUMAD program from April through June this year.

conventions was completed on 17 February at a conference, which brought together
more than 50 participants among government, NGOs and international
organizations.
Soligorsk opens service centre for injecting drug users 17 February 2005
A medical centre providing services to injecting drug users while preserving their anonymity was opened in February inside the premises of the Soligorsk City Centre for Hygiene and Epidemiology. The Centre, which was named "Your Choice", has been established under a EU/UNDP: “Programme of Assistance for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova”.

14, on St. Valentine's Day, the city of Mogilyov hosted an action "Time to Love
– Time to Think," organized under the Project "Expansion of Access of Youth to
Services and Information in the Sphere of Reproductive Health," which is
implemented with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
UNDP to hold a series of seminars on Chernobyl 14 February 2005 | UNDP
On
February 17 in Brest region within the framework of the UNDP support project for
the CORE Programme and with support of the SDC an integration workshop will be
held. At the end of February – beginning of March this year the CORE programme
Coordination Team within the component “Local Coordination and Integration” of
the UNDP support project is planning a series of mini-trainings for the project
proposals initiators in the four CORE districts.

The most of the audience will make School Director Assistants for Upbringing. After the film, a meeting with the representatives of the Project will take place.
Citizens of Belarus make donations to help tsunami victims 09 February 2005
The
tsunami attack that happened on December 26, 2004, in the South-Eastern Asia was
the heaviest of all calamities, to which the United Nations had to react
throughout its 60-years history. According to the latest data, the Indian Ocean
tsunami killed more than two hundred thousand people and injured five hundred
thousand more. About five million people lost their homes, food and means of
subsistence.

Information technologies come to boarding schools 07 February 2005
A workshop for social teachers and psychologists of the boarding schools of the Minsk Region "Information Technologies in the Education Process of Boarding Schools" was held on February 4 in the computer class of the "United Way" BROO. The event was a part of the computer education process of specialists of the boarding schools of the Minsk Region, carried out by the experts of the "Focus Group" Public Association under the Project "Internet – Boarding School."

February 3, the Conference Hall of the "Yubileynaya" Hotel in Minsk
hosted a workshop, named same as the Project of the UNDP "Biomass Energy for
Heating and Hot Water Supply in Belarus." The event, which was attended by about
a hundred participants from Belarus, Russia, Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Finland,
and Austria, was dedicated to considering modern technologies of woodwaste
combustion for thermal and electric power generation, and to sharing
international experiences in manufacture of boilers and construction of boiler
houses and thermal power plants (TPPs), which use biomass as fuel.

Belarusian entrepreneurs have acquired a competent helper – the www.info.minsk.by electronic city information system, designed by the "Information Society" National Public Association (NPA) under the Joint Project of the of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Government of the Republic of Belarus "Promoting Enterprise Activity through Public-Private Partnerships in Belarus." Some of these days, the presentation of the Internet web site has taken place during the summing up procedure of the second mini-grants tender, which was directed at infrastructural support of small businesses.
UNDP started implementation of the project on HIV/AIDS prevention in Belarus 18 January 2005
The United Nations Development
Programme jointly with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus started
the implementation of international technical assistance project «Prevention and
Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus”. The Project was approved by
the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of Belarus and is funded by the
Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which represents
partnership between governments, civil society and the private sector with the
Secretariat in Geneva (Switzerland).
Belarusian organisations and individuals can donate in support of tsunami victims 06 January 2005
Spearheading the international effort to bring relief to the victims of
last week's devastating Indian Ocean tsunami, United Nations Secretary-General
Kofi Annan on 6 January launched a $977 million flash appeal for emergency aid –
by far the largest ever for a natural disaster and almost three times the
previous record. “As we grieve for the dead and pray for those still searching
for loved ones, we have a duty to the survivors,” Mr. Annan told a meeting of
world leaders in Jakarta, Indonesia, calling for a concerted effort to prevent a
second wave of death from preventable causes due to polluted water, and a third
wave of despair where people cannot recover their livelihoods, homes or
communities.
