On 22 December in the village of Komarovo of the Myadelsky district of the Minsk region an event took place which had long been expected by the local dwellers as well as by many other people: a Rural Business Development Center was opened in a typical Belarusian village with the population of not more than one thousand people. The activities of the Center are expected to cover four districts.
IFC to Focus on Removing Regulatory Barriers for SMEs in Belarus

December 1, on the World AIDS Day, Belarus launched the World Campaign "Women, Girls, and HIV/AIDS." The aim of the Campaign is to reduce the vulnerability of women to HIV-infection, to strengthen the role of women in decision-making: to preserve one's health in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemics.

November 9, the city of Jönköping, Sweden, launched the annual largest Subcontractors' Fair in the Northern Europe and the second largest in the world – the Elmia Subcontractor 2004. Fifteen Belarusian enterprises are exhibiting their products at the Fair – medium-power electric motors, regulators, cable and conductor ware, machine parts, fixtures, instrumentation, tools for processing fragile materials, equipment parts and technological tooling, and furniture accessories.

UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura condemned the assassination of Veronika Cherkasova, a journalist for the independent Belarus newspaper Solidarnost, in Minsk on October 20. Mr Matsuura also voiced concern over reports of widespread attacks on freedom of the press in the country in recent months.

September 28, the Conference Hall of the "Yubileinaya" Hotel Complex hosted a presentation of the movie "Ally’s Dream" filmed under the EU/UNDP Project "Combating Trafficking in Women in Belarus," which is financed by the European Commission. The movie is intended to assist in preventive work with the population; it contains relevant information for vulnerable and high-risk groups (young girls and women) on the work abroad, discloses the methods of trafficking in people, and draws attention to the problems of illegal migration and life of children in unfortunate families.
National Strategy on Sustainable Development of Belarus towards 2020 published

September 24 the Press Centre at 5 Oktiabrskaya Street hosted a presentation of the National Strategy on Sustainable Social and Economic Development of Belarus for the Period till 2020 (NSSD-2020), published in the Russian and English (a summary) languages. June 22, 2004, the NSSD-2020 was approved by the Presidium of the Council of Ministers of Belarus and is now, according to the legislation of the country, the supreme planning and forecasting document within the system of national and regional social and economic forecasts and plans.

IFC makes first real-sector investment in Belarus

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector financing arm of the World Bank Group, has signed an agreement to make an equity investment of $3 million in Detroit Belarus Brewing Company (“DBBC”) and to lend $7 million to CJSC Belarus Brewing Company (“BBC”). DBBC and BBC are participating in the privatization of OJSC Dednovo Brewery (“Dednovo”), located in Bobruisk of the Mohilev Region in Belarus.

June 20 the Pobeda movie theatre (20 Internatsionalnaya St.) hosted an opening ceremony of the festival of art movies "Days of Films on Refugees". The organizers of the event were the Representative Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Belarus and the "Kinovideoprokat" Unitary Enterprise (UE) of the Minsk City Executive Committee. The movie show took place for the fourth time in Belarus and was dated to the World Refugees Day marked annually on June 20 under the decision of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mikhail Khvostov, Belarus' Ambassador to the USA, acting on behalf of the Government of Be-larus, put the signature under the WHO Framework Convention on Combating Tobacco. The Convention was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO), and obliges its participants to limit advertising of cigarettes and undertake other measures to fight smoking.

Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Belarus Appointed

The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) has approved the decision of the UN Human Rights Commission to appoint a Special Rapporteur on human rights in Belarus. This decision was taken despite objections of representatives of Belarus, China, Cuba and Russian Federation. The task of the Special Rapporteur will be to establishing direct contacts with the government and people of Belarus with the aim to study the situation with human rights in the country.

June 3 the National Museum of History and Culture of Belarus hosted an opening ceremony of a picture-show of children's works, which had been sent from all over the country to the contest of pictures, dedicated to the topic of refugees. The contest was organized by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Belarus and the Liason Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Belarus, and its participants were more than 1000 schoolboys, including children refugees.

In 1992 the UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro identified the diversity of species, ecological systems and landscapes as one of the priority agendas for policymakers and the world community. Biological diversity was acknowledged as an integral pillar of the world heritage and vital source of economic and social development of humanity. However, at present many species and ecological systems are endangered. Anthropogenic factor is one of the reasons why species are disappearing at an alarming rate. That is why the Conference member-states including Belarus signed the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Experts to examine European population trends and policies

The European Population Forum 2004 was held on 12-14 January in Geneva. The international experts on population and reproductive health issues met at the Palais des Nations to examine key issues in Europe and North America, their causes, consequences and policy responses. Participants of the Forum included professionals in the social, demographic, economic and health fields, representatives of the executive and legislative branches of governments, academia and research institutions, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and private sector.
