region an event took place which had long been expected by the local dwellers as

The movie is intended to assist in preventive work with the population; it contains relevant information for vulnerable and high-risk groups (young girls and women) on the work abroad, discloses the methods of trafficking in people, and draws attention to the problems of illegal migration and life of children in unfortunate families.

Belarus has signed the Framework Convention on Combating Tobacco 20 June 2004
Mikhail
Khvostov, Belarus' Ambassador to the USA, acting on behalf of the Government of
Be-larus, put the signature under the WHO Framework Convention on Combating
Tobacco. The Convention was initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO),

Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Belarus Appointed 17 June 2004
The Economic
and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) has approved the decision of
the UN Human Rights Commission to appoint a Special Rapporteur on human rights
in Belarus. This decision was taken despite objections of representatives of
Belarus, China, Cuba and Russian Federation. The task of the Special Rapporteur
will be to establishing direct contacts with the government and people of
Belarus with the aim to study the situation with human rights in the
country.

June 3 the National Museum of History and Culture of Belarus hosted an opening ceremony of a picture-show of children's works, which had been sent from all over the country to the contest of pictures, dedicated to the topic of refugees. In 1992 the
UN Conference in Rio de Janeiro identified the diversity of species, ecological
systems and landscapes as one of the priority agendas for policymakers and the
world community. Biological diversity was acknowledged as an integral pillar of
the world heritage and vital source of economic and social development of
humanity. However, at present many species and ecological systems are
endangered. Anthropogenic factor is one of the reasons why species are
disappearing at an alarming rate. That is why the Conference member-states
including Belarus signed the Convention on Biological Diversity.

The
world’s single worst nuclear accident, the tragedy at the Chernobyl power plant,
occurred 18 years ago this month. The impact on communities in Belarus, the
Russian Federation and Ukraine, however, remains severe today.

The charitable campaign «Sport and Pop Stars Against AIDS» will be launched on 28 April 2004. The campaign is organized by the United Nations Development Program jointly with famous tennis player Maksim Mirny, UN Good Will Ambassador on HIV/AIDS in 2003-2004, and is supported by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus, the Minsk City Executive Committee and the AIDS Prevention Department of the National Center of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health.
Photo exhibition «This is Your Earth» was opened in Minsk 13 April 2004
On 12 April the Exhibition Hall of the Minsk Palace of Children and Youth hosted the award ceremony of the first international photo contest «This is Your Earth», organized within the framework of the UN Global Campaign for promoting the UN Millenium Declaration adopted at the UN Millenium Summit in September 2000.

School of Traditions in Turov Will Work For the Future 30 March 2004 | UNDP
On 24 March
Turov, one of the most ancient towns in Belarus, hosted the session dedicated to
the establishment of the School of Traditions «Land of Ancestors». The event was
initiated by the UNDP Project «Development and Internalization of the National
Sustainable Development Strategy Within the Context of the Republic of Belarus»,
the World Bank Country Office and the Turov Department of the Belarusian Center
for Wild Nature Conservation. Among the participants of the roundtable were
representatives of the non-governmental organizations, local authorities,
Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental
Protection.

Turov (the Gomel region) has happened to be the first town in Belarus attempting to develop the local action plan for achieving sustainable development. The development of the Local Agenda 21 was initiated by the community-based organization «Ecoline» whose activists organized in 1999 a series of meetings between Turov dwellers and the local authorities.

On 10-12 March
the WHO Regional Office in Europe jointly with the Ministry of Health of the
Republic of Belarus organized a workshop in Minsk on strengthening the national
capacity of CIS countries on tobacco control.

On 3 March the roundtable «Information and Communication Technologies and State Governance. E-Government» was held in the House of Government in Minsk. The event brought together the Parliament members, government officials, representatives of business community and general public. International experts A. Belarus’ Military Academy, UNFPA and UNAIDS contributed to the implementation of the National Program on HIV/AIDS prevention 01 March 2004
The
independent evaluation of the project «Improvement of Training of Belarus’ Armed
Forces Officers in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Methods of Working with the
Personnel» was conducted in February 2004. The project was implemented from June
2002 to March 2004 by the Military Academy of the Republic of Belarus; technical
and financial support was provided by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)
and the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
The World Bank intends to evaluate its strategy for Belarus 26 February 2004
Luca
Barbone, the World Bank Country Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, paid
a two-day-visit to Belarus to exchange views with Belarusian counterparts on the
country socio-economic situation and assess implementation of, early agreed with

On 24 February, Kevin
McGrath, Acting UN/UNDP Resident-Coordinator, met with Irina Aleksanova, Head of
the Labor and Social Protection Department of the Minsk City Executive
Committee. The sides discussed the issues related to the establishment of the
rehabilitation shelter for victims of trafficking within the framework of the
joint program of the European Commission and the UNDP «Combating trafficking in
women in the Republic of Belarus».

A number of regional traininigs in computer skills, the use of Internet and subject-related search for medical information in the global network have been organized for medical doctors in January-February 2003 within the framework of IATP-Belarus Sub-Program (Internet Access and Training Program) of the UNDP Project «Assistance in Expanded Use of Information and Communication Technologies in the Republic of Belarus».

Teaching sustainable development basics from childhood 06 February 2004 | UNDP
At the
end of January 2004 the set of educational materials in the Belarusian language
for children and teenagers aimed at promoting the knowledge about sustainable
development was published within the framework of the «Development and
Internalization of the National Sustainable Development Strategy Within the
Context of the Republic of Belarus» Project of United Nations Development
Program (UNDP). Financial support was provided by the Department of Public
Information of the UN Office in Belarus.
Asymmetries of transition will be discussed in the new National Human Development Report 04 February 2004 | UNDP
«The New Belarus’ Human Development Report should focus on the asymmetries of the transition period», — recommended the participants of the roundtable which was held in the UN Office at the end of 2003. Among the participants of the discussion were more than twenty Belarusian prominent researchers who have a broad participatory experience in the UNDP projects on drafting the national human development reports that have been implemented in Belarus since 1995.

Cooperation completed his visit to Belarus. The objective of Mr Egeland's visit
to Belarus was to familiarize with the human consequences of the Chernobyl
nuclear accident and social impacts experienced by the affected regions as well
as to discuss with the Belarusian authorities the issues related to the
implementation of the new resolution of the UN General Assembly on strengthening
international cooperation and coordination of efforts in investigating,
mitigating and minimizing the Chernobyl impacts.

On 21 January the roundtable «Computerization and e-society in Belarus» was held in the House of Government. A working meeting for discussing the idea of establishing the Church and Community Council on HIV/AIDS was held on 20 January in the conference hall of the UN Office in Belarus. Extension of the UNDP Sustainable Development Project 20 January 2004 | UNDP
The Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have decided to extend the UNDP Project "Development and Internalization of the National Sustainable Development Strategy within the Context of the Republic of Belarus" for the first six months of 2004. In 2004 the main activities of the project will include publication of NSDS - 2020 after it is approved by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus and organization of the international conference on sustainable development.
Experts to examine European population trends and policies 14 January 2004
The European Population Forum 2004 was held on 12-14 January in Geneva. The international experts on population and reproductive health issues met at the Palais des Nations to examine key issues in Europe and North America, their causes, consequences and policy responses. Participants of the Forum included professionals in the social, demographic, economic and health fields, representatives of the executive and legislative branches of governments, academia and research institutions, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations and private sector.
