On the eve of September 1, as many as two children’s preschool institutions of the Homieĺ Region overjoyed their kindergarteners by new sports and gaming facilities. On August 27, a welcoming and modern gym/music hall opened after renovation in the Crèche and Kindergarten No. 2 in the town of Chojniki, and a playground was put in operation on the premises of the kindergarten in the village of Sudkava in the Chojniki District. That became possible thanks to the financial assistance of the EU/UNDP project "Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl disaster in Belarus".
International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on 29 August 26 August 2010
On 27 August 2010 the National Press Center hosted a press conference devoted to the International Day against Nuclear Tests, which is celebrated all over the world on 29 August 2010. The proposal calling for the establishment of the Day was put forward by the Government of Kazakhstan and co–sponsored by 25 UN Member States, including the Republic of Belarus.
The Largest Belarusian Fair Revived with the Support of an EU/UNDP Project 23 August 2010 | UNDP
On August 21, the urban-type settlement of Zeĺva (Hrodna Region) hosted Anna’s Fair – formerly one of the largest trade and entertainment festivals in Europe. The revival of the fair is the result of joint efforts undertaken by the administration of the settlement and the EU/UNDP project “Sustainable Development at Local Level” that aims to revive the traditions of ancestors. The project provided financial and advisory assistance to Zeĺva residents to resume the fair.
A Consultative Centre for Support Related to the Issues of Small and Medium Business Starts to Operate in Homiel 19 August 2010 | UNDP
Yesterday, a Centre for Expert and Consultative Support Related to the Issues of Small and Medium Business established within the framework of the joint EU/UNDP “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” opened in Homieĺ. The Centre operates on the premises of the “Business Centre Ltd.” Over the course of the first three months, free consultations on the issues of small and medium business will be provided to local residents here.

13 journalists representing media from Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania and the UK visited Belarus on July 22–24. One of the main objectives of the visit was to familiarize the citizens of EU Member States with specific projects, which the European Union is implementing in Belarus within the European Neighbourhood Policy.
Maria Sharapova Gives Quarter Million Dollars for UNDP projects 01 July 2010 | UNDP Gomel, Belarus — Maria Sharapova, tennis star and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador, today made a personal contribution of US $250,000.00 to expand a UNDP–supported programme that provides sports and physical activities for youth in the area affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. A report from the 2005 Chernobyl Forum, involving eight specialized UN agencies and the governments of Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine, found that although the health–related effects of the disaster have cleared up, poverty and diseases related to alcohol, smoking, stress and poor diets remain serious threats to people living in the region.

On 9 June 2010 the Project Ideas’ Contest organized under the joint EU/UNDP project “Combat the Negative Effects of the Chernobyl Disaster in Belarus” is declared closed and the final results are summed up. Thirty five project initiatives are recognized as winners of the contest and will be implemented in 4 target districts of Gomel Oblast, namely, Vetka, Zhitkovichy, Khoiniki and Buda-Koshelevo. The total funding will exceed 0.5 million USD.

Today, in Veliky Bor kindergarten / secondary school named after B.I. The residents of Belarusian cities became witnesses to unusual actions on the last days of spring. On May 30–31, everyone who wished to do so had an opportunity not only to quit smoking, but also to get a reward for doing it – a t–shirt with the picture of a green tree and with the slogan of the action “Breathe Freely!" The action started on May 30 near the National Library – competitions for professional and amateur bicyclists took place there.

For the first time, recommendations for journalists on covering the issue of human trafficking and related crimes have been developed in Belarus. The document was elaborated by the journalists of the national and regional media and students of the Institute of Journalism of the Belarusian State University with participation of international experts from Ukraine during the training “Covering the Issue of Human Trafficking in the Media” organized in the framework of the EU–UNDP–UNICEF project “Preventing, Fighting and Addressing the Social Consequences of Trafficking in Human Beings in the Republic of Belarus”.
Belarus receives more than $24 million to fight HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis 24 May 2010 | UNDP
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has awarded two major grants Belarus which will be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme. The grants allocate US $17 million to fight tuberculosis and US $7.5 million to fight HIV/AIDS for the years 2010–2013. Vladimir Potupchik, Vice Premier of Belarus and Chair of the Belarussian Association of anti–HIV/AIDS NGOs, signed the agreements on behalf of Belarus.
Biological Diversity in the Art Project “Biosphere 2010” 23 May 2010
On the eve of the International Day for Biological Diversity — marked every year on May 22 — the opening of the exhibition "Biosphere 2010" took place. It is the third joint art project of the art gallery “The University of Culture” and the UN Country Office in the Republic of Belarus. May 14, 2010 – an opening of the road dam event took place in the village Zapesochye, Gomel Oblast, an anti–flood construction, unique by its idea and implementation. Zapesochje village is located on the right bank of the picturesque Pripyat River, which is notable forits tricky character and is often called the Belarusian Poseidon.

The new UNDP/GEF project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Territorial Planning Policies and Practices”, an inception seminar of which was held in Minsk yesterday, is designed to ensure environmentally balanced land use at the district level. Land use is environmentally balanced if production activities outside the boundaries of protected natural areas are conducted without distorting the normal operation of ecosystems and their components.

Yesterday, the United Nations Office in Belarus together with public association “The National Holocaust Foundation” and the Union of Belarusian Jewish Communities held a commemorative evening event dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day. 65 years ago Soviet troops liberated Auschwitz–Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
