Water in Art. Opening of the Exhibition “H2O” 26 November 2013
On November 29, 2013, at 17.00 in the art gallery “University of Culture” an art project “H2O”, organized by the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts and the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Belarus, will be opened. The project is dedicated to the International Year of Water Cooperation. Water is essential to humans, it is definitely an aesthetic, cultural and spiritual value. Water is a source of inspiration and a vital element of physical existence at the same time. In the works of the project participants, image of water is reflected in all its diversity, as well as the global issue of access for all people to water is raised.

Celebrating United Nations Day 25 October 2013
24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948. In 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that the day be observed by Member States as a public holiday. Since 1992 a number of the United Nations Organizations have been conducting their activities in the Republic of Belarus. On United Nations Day it has become a tradition to draw up the results, to hold meetings, discussions and exhibitions dedicated to the UN activities and its achievements.
New project on Initial Implementation of Accelerated HCFC Phase Out launched 25 October 2013 | UNDP
The United Nations Development Programme in Belarus, with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), has launched its full-scale project “Initial Implementation of Accelerated HCFC Phase Out in the CEIT Region”. The National Executing agency is the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Belarus. The Inception Workshop, aimed at presenting the project to a wide range of stakeholders, took place at the “Stolitsa” Business Centre in the Victoria Hotel in Minsk.

The International Children’s Painting Competition on the Environment is organized every year by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Japan-based Foundation for Global Peace and Environment (FGPE), Bayer and Nikon Corporation. It has been held since 1991 and has received more than 3 million entries from children in over 150 countries.

On August 5, 2013 UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Sanaka Samarasinha and U.S. Charge d'Affaires Ethan Goldrich paid tribute to Ruth Waller, one of the first United Nations employees who gave their lives for the good of others.
In 1946 Ruth Waller came to Minsk to work for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA).

Combating Human Trafficking on the Agenda of the Minsk International Workshop 29 May 2013
A two-day workshop on observing various aspects of human rights in the course of combating human trafficking for competent authorities of the Member States of the Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking (Group of Friends) and international organizations opened in Minsk on 29 May. During the workshop the participants will discuss unified approaches to implementation of international standards in protecting the rights of victims of trafficking, improvement of cooperation between law enforcement agencies of the Member States of the Group of Friends and international organizations, and ways to optimize observation of human rights in the course of preventing and combating human trafficking.

Efficiency of Methadone Substitution Therapy in Belarus: figures speak for themselves 23 May 2013 | UNDP
Belarus continues the expansion of the network of methadone substitution therapy offices. Currently, there are about 1,000 patients throughout the country. The 18th methadone substitution therapy point was opened today on the premises of the Homiel Tuberculosis and Narcological Dispensary. Implemented by UNDP ongoing grants of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria sponsored the repair and installation of the equipment. The total costs for the methadone substitution therapy program within the framework of the Global Fund grants have exceeded US$ 1,152,000 from January, 2010 to July, 2012.

On May 3, 2013 Mr.Vladimir Makei, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, met with Mr.Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative. The discussion has focused on the implementation of the United Nations Development Framework Programme (UNDAF) for Belarus for 2011–2015, which essentially brings in one large document the activities of all UN agencies operating in Belarus. The parties have exchanged views on the recently accomplished UNDAF’s mid–term review and shared the point about the need to proceed proactively together in an effort to mobilize donor resources for the Programme’s implementation.

The national conference "Global Development Agenda beyond 2015 – Belarus" was held in Minsk on March 27. The event was arranged by the United Nations Office in the Republic of Belarus. The conference objective was to discuss development agenda beyond 2015 in the national context. This conference is part of the national consultations in Belarus. A Thousand Days to Keep the Millennium Promise 27 March 2013
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but starting this week we can march a thousand days forward into a new future. On April 5, the world will reach a vital moment in history’s largest and most successful anti–poverty push – the 1,000–day mark before the target date to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
These eight concrete goals were set in the year 2000, when more leaders than ever before gathered at the United Nations and agreed to cut global poverty and hunger by half, fight climate change and disease, tackle unsafe water and sanitation, expand education and open doors of opportunity for girls and women.
On March 22, 2013, the World Water Day, UNO Minsk jointly with the National Scientific and Technical Library held a seminar in the form of a scientific café "Cooperation in the field of water management and natural water quality assessment in Belarus".
World Water Day is held annually as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

1,134 Belarusians have taken part in the MYWorld on–line survey organized by the United Nations and its partners. Given the country population size, the Republic of Belarus is leading in the voting process on the agenda of development after the year 2015. Voting results in neighboring countries are as follows: Ukraine: 1800 people have voted, Russia: over 400, Poland: over 200.

The UN Office in Belarus has announced the "Belarusian Language – Reflection of Our Thoughts and Feelings" photo contest dedicated to International Mother Language Day (February 21). On January 25 an exhibition of photos by well–known Belarusian photographer Anatoly Kleschuk “My Righteous” opened in the Minsk City History Museum. The exhibition of 58 black and white photos is exploring the theme of Belarusians who risked their lives and their families to rescue Jews during the Holocaust on Belarusian territory.
