On 17 June 2004
the
Republic of Belarus signed the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control
(FCTC). Convention is WHO's first treaty unanimously adopted by Member States at
the Fiftysixth World Health Assembly as a response to the globalization of the
epidemic of tobaccorelated diseases. At present the FCTC has been signed by 168
countries.
On 16 July 2004
the
official launch of telemedicine system within the finalisation of the initial
stage of the joint project with WHO headquarters and Sasakawa Memorial Health
Foundation (SMHF), Japan, "Medical Relief for Children Affected by the Chernobyl
Accident through the Development and Implementation of Health Telematics" was
held at the National Scientific and Practical Center of Radiation Medicine and
Human Ecology in Gomel. The representatives of the Ministry of Health of
Belarus, SMHF and WHO attended the opening ceremony. The possibilities of the
established facility were demonstrated. The international seminar on
telemedicine application was organized on the same
day.
