The objective of the visit was
to study the post–Chernobyl problems facing the district, to meet with the staff
of the relevant projects of the CORE Program («Cooperation for
Rehabilitation») and to identify areas of further cooperation. During the tri p
the UN representatives were accompanied by Vladimir Tsalko, Chairman of the
Chernobyl Committee of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus,
Vladimir Danilenko, Head of the Slavgorodsky District Executive Committee and
Zoya Trofimchik, CORE Program Coordinator.
UN representatives and the
Belarusian officials visited the Krymyanka village whose
dwellers were resettled and the memorial «Park of Buried Villages» and met with
residents of the Lesnaya village. Chairman of the Chernobyl Committee informed
UN representatives about the current situation in the affected areas, the
government efforts aimed at mitigation of the Chernobyl impacts and the progress
with implementation of the international projects on rehabilitation of the
contaminated territories in Belarus. Louisa Vinton reaffirmed willingness to
continue the activities in line with the recommendations summarized in the UNDP
2002 Report «The Human Consequences of the Chernobyl Nuclear Accident. The
Strategy of Recovery» such as a need to shift focuses from emergency aid to
humanitarian programs and concrete projects on rehabilitation of the
contaminated areas with a view of facilitating their sustainable development. Ms
Vinton noted that she wanted to visit the Chernobyl–affected areas a long time
ago. She also supported Belarus' initiative to hold in 2006 in Minsk an
international conference to mark the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl
disaster.
