The Ways of Achieving the Millennium Development Goal Ns1 will be Discussed in Minsk
Representatives
of the national and regional government authorities, experts, policy–makers and
public figures from Belarus and other countries of the regions as well as
representatives of the international organizations will be invited to the
conference. The major objective of the conference is to develop common
approaches to customizing the Millennium Development Goal N° 1 formulated in the
Millennium Declaration (Poverty Reduction) to the specifics of the region and to
draft recommendations for elaboration of a National Poverty Reduction Strategy
in Belarus.
The conference
participants will discuss the following issues:

poverty origin and dimensions: national specifics of identification,
evaluation and monitoring;

achieving the Millennium Development Goal No 1: experience, problems
and customizing to the specifics of the region;
-
conceptual approaches to elaborating poverty reduction strategies and
programs;
-
social policies in the region: country specifics and common
trends;
-
economic opportunities for poverty
prevention;
- enhancing
the role of civil society, NGOs and international organizations in addressing
poverty–related problems.
During Day 1 of the conference plenary session will be combined with
panel discussions. Within the framework of discussions all participants will
have an opportunity to contribute to drafting proposals and recommendations
which will be then presented at the final plenary session. Day 2 will focus on
best practice and experience exchange. The conference participants will meet
with representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the
Republic of Belarus, non–governmental organizations and staff of the UNDP
Project on Elaboration of a National Poverty Reduction Strategy in Belarus. An
introductory visit to one of the territorial centers for social care services
will be organized for participants of the conference.
